As principal of Adelaide West Special Education Centre I am proud to lead a group of dedicated educators who value all of our students, recognising their individual strengths and needs, believing in their ability to learn and providing them with quality teaching and learning opportunities. Each student has their own Negotiated Education Plan with individual goals planned by teachers in collaboration with parents. Our students all work within the requirements of the Australian Curriculum or SACE, with adjustments as required to enable them to meet their own individual goals whilst having a broad and varied range of curriculum experiences.
All of the students who attend the Taperoo Campus have complex communication needs and require support in order to develop functional communication. I am a passionate advocate for communication for our students. The ability to communicate effectively is one of the fundamental joys and needs of being a human being. Without a functional communication system, people are not only deprived of these but are also exposed to greater risks of abuse and failing to meet their potential than those who can communicate. As a school specialising in the education of students with complex communication needs we support all of our students to develop more effective and efficient means of communication.
Adelaide West Special Education Centre is accredited as a Movement Opportunities via Education (MOVE) model site and about 40% of our student population are part of the MOVE program. In close consultation with families, this program provides students with significant physical disabilities with opportunities to practice the fundamental movement skills of sitting, standing, walking or transition.
I am honoured to be the Principal of this school and would be happy provide further information about our programs so please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.
