The Modified SACE

Students have the opportunity to complete their Modified SACE at Adelaide West Special Education Centre over 4 years. Students are offered a Modified SACE curriculum structure that best meets their learning needs and the requirements of the SACE Board of SA. The Modified SACE Curriculum enables students with a range of physical, cognitive and sensory disabilities to demonstrate their learning in a range of subjects.

Students access a range of subjects in five broad learning areas that enable them to achieve their personal learning goals.

The five broad learning areas are

• English
• Mathematics
• Physical Health
• Emotional well-being
• Transition

Teaching content and delivery is adapted to best meet individual student needs.

For example variations of English include-

• English to enable development of a sense of self and meaningful connection with others through Intensive Interaction.
• English to enable students to develop skills using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems to overcome the impact of motor difficulties and cognitive impairment on their ability to speak, read and write.
• English to develop reading and writing and expressive skills in preparation for adult life.

Similarly Maths teaching supports development mathematical understandings relevant to the individual student. Foundation understandings of Maths are taught to those who need it through a sensory focussed program while other students may develop numeracy skills and understanding for everyday life such as time and money management skills.

All students access a SACE curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and personally challenging.
